THE ATARASHII GAKKO! (whose literal meaning in Japanese is “new school”) is made up of four young women who are resignifying the idea of a female group of music and dance. Its members wear sailor uniforms reminiscent of the style adopted by Japanese schoolgirls in the 1970s and 1980s, with long skirts and knee-length socks. The group also rejects any kind of objectification. With its own choreography, its expressive and even aggressive movements are a hybrid of the energy of Japanese butoh dance, heavy metal and hip-hop. Musically, the AG! It brings together elements of modern J-Pop, Showa-era kayokyoku, as well as rap, punk and dance music. In reality it is almost impossible to try to pinpoint a musical genre for the group.
