When a poisonous rain of Xistazul fell from the sky, humanity took refuge underground to escape the deadly tragedy, known as the Tears of the New Moon. 100 years later, people returned to the surface to begin a new era. With the constant threat of the Eliminators, the humans created settlements, called Nests, alongside humanoid AIs, called Magus. In 2242, Kanata dreams of becoming a nomad. While exploring the ruins of a museum with the renowned Tokio Nomad, he meets a Magus called Noir, who has lost all her memories. Noir struggles with everyday tasks, but shines in a battle against the Eliminators. Kanata joins Noir as she discovers what it takes to be a Nomad.
History is set in the distant future. The earth is ruined, and humanity establishes the mobile plantation of fort city. The pilots produced inside Plantation Live in Mistilteinn, also known as the "birdcage". The children live there without knowing anything about the outside world or the freedom of heaven. Their lives consist of fighting to carry out missions. Their enemies are mysterious giant life forms known as Kyōryū, and the children's robot pilots have called Franxx to face off against them. For the children, riding the Franxx proves its existence. A boy named Hiro is called Code: 016, and he was once known as a prodigy. However, he has been left behind, and his existence seems unnecessary. Not flying a Franxx is the same as ceasing to exist. One day, a mysterious girl known as "Zero Two" appears. Two horns grow out of its head.
